If you've seen ads for "AI school photos" and wondered what that actually means, here's the short version: a parent uploads a photo of their child, an AI model generates new portrait-style images from that photo, and the family picks the ones they want as prints or downloads. No photographer visit, no picture-day schedule. The part worth understanding is what happens to the uploaded image in between — because that's where safety, privacy, and control live. This piece is a mechanism-level walkthrough of the pipeline, vendor-named and source-linked. It is not a buying guide. It's here so you can ask sharper questions of any provider, including us. The pipeline, step by step
AI-generated school portraits typically move through five stages. Each stage is a place where a provider makes choices, and those choices are what you're actually evaluating when you pick a service.
1. Upload
You send a photo (usually one) to the provider. The photo travels over HTTPS from your browser to the provider's servers. At that point the photo exists on their infrastructure. Good providers document where — which cloud, which region, which storage bucket access policy. A provider that can't name where the photo is stored cannot make credible promises about it.
2. Pre-processing
Before generation, the image is usually resized, cropped, and sometimes normalized for lighting. This is boring, mechanical work. It does not change what the model "knows" about your child. It prepares the image for the model's input requirements.
3. Generation
The provider sends the pre-processed image, plus a prompt describing the style, to an image model. For many providers today, that model is Google's Gemini image generation model, accessed via API. Google publishes the API terms for this, including a statement on how API inputs and outputs are handled for training purposes. The public terms are at ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms. As of this writing, Google's API terms state that inputs and outputs from paid-tier API calls are not used to train or improve Google models.
Important: the model doesn't retain your photo as a memory. It produces an output image for that one request. The weights of the model do not update based on your photo — model training is a separate, offline process with different data sources and different contracts.
4. Delivery
The provider returns the generated images through their website or app. If you order prints, a print-on-demand vendor handles physical production — a separate vendor with separate policies, worth naming in the privacy page.
5. Retention and deletion
This is the stage that matters most, and the stage most providers write the least about.
Three sub-questions:
- Originals. How long is the uploaded photo kept after the request? Some providers delete originals within hours; others retain them for "support" windows measured in months.
- Generated images. How long are the AI-generated images stored? If they're tied to your account, are they kept for the life of the account or a fixed window?
- Backups. Backups and logs have their own retention windows, sometimes longer than the main data. A responsible provider discloses these separately.
What "AI" actually is in this context
"AI" here means a large neural network trained months or years ago on data unrelated to your family, now being used to generate new images conditioned on a reference photo and a text prompt. Two things are true at once:
- The model's training is complete; it is not learning from your upload.
- The model is a third-party service, governed by that third party's terms.
When this doesn't apply
This walkthrough describes providers using commercial AI APIs (Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI) under paid-tier terms. It does not describe:
- Free or consumer-tier AI apps. Free products routinely use inputs for training by default. Reading the terms is not optional there.
- Open-source models run by the provider. If a provider runs the model themselves on their own hardware, the contract surface is different — there is no third-party API term to link to. Ask how the model was trained, where inference happens, and whether any inputs are logged.
- Providers who decline to name their AI vendor. If a provider won't say whose model is generating the image, the pipeline above is a guess, not an assurance.
What to ask any provider
Four questions. If a provider can answer each in one clear sentence, with a link or a policy reference, they have thought about this seriously.
- Where are uploaded photos stored, and in what region?
- For how long are originals retained after the generation request completes?
- Who can access uploaded photos — internal staff, vendors, or contractors — and under what controls?
- Is any uploaded image used, now or in the future, to train AI models?
FAQ
Does the AI model remember my child after the photo is generated? No, not in the sense most people mean. The model produces an output for one request and does not carry state across requests. The separate question — whether the uploaded photo is kept on the provider's servers for any length of time — is a storage question, not a model question.
Can the AI-generated images of my child appear in someone else's results? For providers using reputable commercial APIs under paid terms, no — the API terms typically prohibit using inputs to train or influence other users' outputs. The risk worth naming is at the storage layer, not the generation layer: if a provider's storage is misconfigured or breached, images can leak independently of the model.
Is AI-generated image data sent overseas? It depends on where the provider and the AI vendor run their infrastructure. Google's Gemini API has documented region controls. A provider should be able to tell you the region their storage lives in and whether API calls cross borders.
What happens if I ask for deletion? A responsible provider should describe two things: the user-facing process (click here, email this address) and the back-end guarantee (originals and derivatives deleted from primary storage within N days; backups aged out within M days). If only one half is described, the other half is where your question lives.
